Indianapolis, Indiana, March 8, 2012 – After learning about the exceptional heating efficiencies that can now be achieved, Puget Sound Energy (PSE), a utility company in western Washington state serving more than one million electric customers, is offering higher rebates to consumers if they install highly efficient air source heat pumps, such as the Infinity® 20 heat pump with Greenspeed™ intelligence, unveiled by Carrier in 2011. Carrier, the world’s leader in high technology heating, air-conditioning and refrigeration solutions, is a part of UTC Climate, Controls & Security, a unit of United Technologies Corp. (NYSE: UTX).

The Infinity 20 heat pump has a Heating Seasonal Performance Factor (HSPF) efficiency rating up to 13 – the highest heating efficiency of any ducted, air source heat pump on the market. It delivers up to 69 percent higher heating efficiency in the three-ton size. This new heat pump is one component of the Infinity heat pump system with Greenspeed intelligence, which can include the Infinity 98 fully modulating gas furnace or Infinity fan coil and an Infinity control. The control leverages information about your comfort choices, your home’s energy use, and even the temperature outdoors to communicate with the system and adjust to the heating and cooling requirements of a home.
PSE is offering an $800 rebate to customers installing highly efficient heat pumps with at least a 10 Heating Seasonal Performance Factor (HSPF) and a 16 Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio (SEER), as rated by the Air-Conditioning, Heating and Refrigeration Institute (AHRI), to replace older, less efficient equipment.
“Ground-breaking heat pumps like the Infinity 20 will deliver comfortable heating three times more efficiently than a standard electric forced-air furnace. This efficiency and energy savings, combined with our new $800 rebate, will deliver long-term benefits at an affordable price for our customers,” said Dennis Rominger, energy efficiency expert, PSE. “The reason we are offering a rebate of this magnitude is because it is cheaper for PSE and our customers to collectively save energy than to build new power plants, buy power on the open market, or to move power from long distances. This keeps the costs down for everyone.”
Rominger also noted that the Greenspeed technology associated with the Carrier Infinity 20 heat pump has benefits from a utility company perspective. “The variable-speed compressor in this heat pump allows it to ramp up or down with a soft start rather than a huge surge, which puts less strain on utility transformers and other infrastructure,” he added.
“At Carrier, we are continually improving on the efficiency, reliability and longevity of our products with the needs of all partners in mind – utility companies, contractors, customers and the environment,” said Matt Nuijens, Carrier brand manager. “Part of that commitment is designing systems, like the Infinity heat pump system with Greenspeed intelligence, that reduce overall energy use, consume fewer resources, and reduce our environmental footprint,” added Nuijens.

Carrier Greenspeed intelligence maximizes the performance of the Infinity 20 heat pump, and helps save energy while making the home more comfortable. Rather than the limited settings associated with one- or two-stage heat pumps, the Infinity 20 heat pump can smoothly adjust its output within a range of up to 40 to 100 percent of capacity to match the heating or cooling requirements of a home. This innovation was made possible by pairing the communication ability of Carrier Greenspeed intelligence with the adaptable speed of a variable-speed compressor, optimized specifically for this heat pump.
